Bird City Court Record Search

Anything filed in Bird City starts with a simple question: which court holds the record? City ordinance cases and municipal traffic tickets belong to the Bird City Municipal Court, and its docket sits with the city clerk at City Hall. Anything bigger, such as civil suits, felonies, probate, or domestic matters, lands in Cheyenne County District Court instead. The city offers no online docket or live calendar, so a Bird City court search means a visit or call to the clerk. Bring the citation number, a party name, and the date you expect the hearing. That is usually enough for the clerk to find the entry.

Bird City Records Start at City Hall

The official Bird City municipal-court provisions show that the clerk preserves papers, keeps the docket, and sets trials.

Bird City City Hall is at 111 E. 4th Street, PO Box 219, Bird City, Kansas 67731. Its phone number is 785-734-2616. Sarah Mellinger is listed as City Clerk at birdcityclerk@outlook.com. Dana Wright is listed as Treasurer, and Frank O'Very as City Superintendent, but the city clerk is the record-search starting point.

Give the clerk enough detail to distinguish the municipal file from a county case. A citation number, name, approximate filing date, violation, and desired document are more useful than a broad request for everything about a person.

State whether inspection, a plain copy, or a certified copy is needed. Ask about the present fee and accepted payment method before staff begins. No published Bird City court-copy schedule was located, so fees from the district court or another city should not be applied by analogy.

Inside the Bird City Municipal Court

Bird City's official code establishes a municipal court with jurisdiction over violations of city ordinances. It adopts Kansas municipal-court procedure under K.S.A. 12-4101 and following. The mayor and council appoint the judge under the local provisions, while the judge appoints the municipal clerk.

The clerk issues process, administers oaths, files and preserves papers, keeps the docket, sets trials, and accounts for fines and forfeited bonds. Sessions occur in the municipal courtroom at City Hall on dates and hours designated by the judge. No current judge name or separate court email was located, so current details should be confirmed with the city clerk.

Bird City's Code Explains the Docket

The official Bird City code viewer is the local ordinance reference. It explains why the court exists, which cases it hears, and what the municipal clerk must record. A docket entry may identify an ordinance section or event, but the current code provides the underlying local rule.

Use the code viewer for ordinance text and City Hall for the case record. The two sources should not be confused: the code does not reveal who has a case, and a public docket entry does not necessarily reproduce the full ordinance, order, exhibit, or other paper.

The official code viewer gives useful visual context for the city's municipal provisions.

The viewer is an ordinance source only; case status and copies still come from the Bird City municipal clerk.

Finding Bird City Court Dates

No live public Bird City calendar was found. The citation or notice supplies the first expected date, and the municipal clerk supplies confirmation. Because the judge designates the court's session dates and hours, a party should verify the setting shortly before appearing and should not infer a reset from a missing web entry.

DateThe date printed on the citation or confirmed from the municipal docket.
TimeThe clerk-confirmed session time set by the court.
CourtroomThe municipal courtroom at Bird City City Hall.
JudgeThe appointed municipal judge; no current name was located.
Setting TypeThe recorded appearance, plea, trial, or compliance event.

Bird City's 27-Case Filing Snapshot

The official FY2023 Kansas Municipal Caseload Annual Report lists 27 Bird City filings. Twenty-five were classified as “other traffic” and two as “other crimes.” It reported zero in the listed reckless-driving, DUI, fleeing, crimes-against-officer, persons, property, and tobacco categories.

27 total FY2023 filings25 other traffic2 other crimes

This is a fiscal-year statistical snapshot, not a current docket count and not evidence that any matter remains open. The FY2016 report did not receive a Bird City summary. That missing report must not be treated as a year with no court activity.

The category labels are reporting buckets, not the exact charge text expected on a citation. For a particular file, rely on the court's ordinance label and docket entry. The statistics are useful as context because reported traffic filings made up nearly all of Bird City's submitted FY2023 total.

Always label the fiscal year and official report when repeating the figure. It cannot show today's pending caseload, the number of hearings on a particular date, the parties involved, or the outcome of any filing. Only the municipal docket and its supporting records can answer those case-level questions accurately.

Bird City Traffic Ticket Lookups

A Bird City ordinance ticket should name its court, citation number, and response date. No public city citation lookup or payment screen was located. Call City Hall with the ticket in hand and ask how to confirm the setting, pay an eligible citation, contest it, or request a record.

The Kansas Central Payment Center is published for district traffic cases and should not be assumed to accept Bird City matters. The due date remains controlling unless the municipal court changes it. District-ticket procedures are summarized on the Cheyenne County traffic court page.

A Missing Bird City Result Proves Little

The U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Kansas illustrates another court system that is not indexed through Bird City City Hall.

A federal bankruptcy result or absence says nothing about whether a Bird City municipal ordinance case exists.

No match in Kansas CaseSearch does not show that a Bird City citation vanished. A municipal ordinance file may never have entered the district system. A record can also be restricted, sealed, expunged, older, or outside a public web collection.

Return to the filing court named on the document. Ask the city clerk to check the municipal docket by citation number and name. If the case was appealed or otherwise filed in district court, obtain that new district number before searching the state portal or contacting the Cheyenne County clerk.

A state portal result must also be matched carefully. Compare county, case type, filing date, party role, judge, and events. A similar name is not enough. Kansas warns that CaseSearch information is not the official record, so a certified or complete document must come from the clerk.

How Bird City Cases Reach the County

Bird City Municipal Court is limited to city ordinance cases. District civil, felony, domestic, probate, juvenile, small-claims, and other general trial matters belong to Cheyenne County District Court even when they arise in Bird City. A municipal appeal can also produce a later district filing.

Use City Hall for the original city record. Use Kansas CaseSearch and the Clerk of the District Court for an eligible district matter. A search should follow the filing court, not merely the person's home or the location described in a complaint.

Bird City Keeps Its Own Record Path

The official Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals is a federal appellate source and sits outside the Bird City and Kansas state-court routes.

That separate federal layer reinforces the need to identify jurisdiction before treating any search system as a complete Bird City docket.

Cheyenne County has two incorporated cities, and their municipal courts do not share one local index. Bird City City Hall handles Bird City ordinance records. St. Francis City Hall handles St. Francis ordinance records. The county clerk handles neither as the original municipal custodian.

The location of an incident does not override the filed court. A state-law district charge arising near Bird City can belong in the county docket, while a Bird City ordinance charge stays municipal. Reading the court name and case number avoids sending one request to three clerks.

Who Can See Bird City Court Records

Public access depends on Kansas law and the contents of the record. Send a specific municipal request to the Bird City clerk, but expect sealed, expunged, exempt, and otherwise restricted material to remain unavailable. A public event or index field does not establish access to every document in the file.

Key Rules:

K.S.A. 12-4101 provides the Kansas municipal-court framework used in Bird City's code.

K.S.A. 45-215 states Kansas public-record policy and points requests to the proper custodian.

K.S.A. 45-221 identifies public-record exemptions that may limit disclosure.

Request a Bird City Docket Copy

Provide the municipal clerk with the citation or case number, party name, approximate date, violation, and exact record sought. Ask whether inspection, a plain copy, or a certified copy is available and what current charge applies. No Bird City court-record fee schedule was located in the research, so do not assume a price.

If staff says the matter belongs to Cheyenne County District Court, contact its clerk at 785-332-8850 and use the district case number. For restricted material, ask what access rule controls. Court staff can identify process and records, but cannot advise a person how to plead or litigate.

Keep the response and any receipt with the citation. If staff provides only an event summary, ask whether the complaint, order, disposition, or payment record is a separate public document. A certified copy requires clerk authentication; a screenshot or web result is not automatically certified.

For an older Bird City record, include a wider date range and ask whether the file is kept in a current system or another city storage format. The research did not establish a complete archive history. That uncertainty should be handled through the municipal clerk, not by assuming that an absent digital entry means the paper was destroyed or never existed.
